International Women’s Day 2017 Panel Discussion

In a special one hour round table discussion for International Women’s Day Maggy Zanger, Rose M. Lopez, Linda Green, and Anna Ochoa O’Leary spoke about domestic issues in the US and in southern Arizona and along the US Mexico border. Topics include forced migration, violence against women, reproductive rights, and the heightened vulnerabilities of indigenous women and all women of color. The panel concluded by talking about the future. What can people in Tucson do to stand up to expected regressive and harmful policies coming from the current administration?

Panel Moderator Maggy Zanger is University of Arizona Journalism Professor of Practice. Her teaching and research focuses on international journalism, the Middle East and Islamic world, US-Mexico Border; media coverage of conflict and humanitarian crises; Iraq, Egypt, Kurdistan; media development; and community journalism. She is affiliated faculty and serves on the Governing Board of the UA Center for Middle Eastern Studies.

Panelists:

Rose M. Lopez is President and CEO of Intermountain Centers for Human Development, a Tucson-based non-profit that offers many programs and services throughout southern Arizona who are dealing with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and other challenges. She is a member of the Tohono O’Odham nation, our neighbors to the east and south of Tucson, and is also a veteran.

Linda B. Green is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and former Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona. Her research centers on women, migration and violence particularly among indigenous peoples in the Americas. Linda Green has, and still, conducts field research in rural Guatemala, along the US-Mexico border and in rural Alaska.

Anna Ochoa O’Leary is the Department Head of the Mexican American Studies Department at the University of Arizona. She has published many research articles in both English and Spanish on migration and gender, including “Women at the Intersection: Immigration Enforcement and Transnational Migration on the U.S.-Mexico Border,” which traces migrant women’s encounters with immigration enforcement agents. She was also editor of Undocumented Immigrants in the United States Today: An Encyclopedia of Their Experiences.
