The well-known and controversial Mexican American studies (MAS) program in Arizona’s Tucson Unified School District set out to create an equitable and excellent educational experience for Latino students. Panelists Julio Cammarota and Augustine Romero, who helped create the program, explored this progressive—indeed revolutionary—educational movement. Tucson Weekly writer Mari Herreras moderated this panel. Cammarota and Romero authored Raza Studies: The Public Option for Educational Revolution, published by UA Press. This is part one of a two part series. This segment was recorded on March 15, 2014 and was originally broadcast on March 23, 2014.

This panel was hosted by Pima County Public Library’s Nuestras Raíces Tent at the 2014 Tucson Festival of Books. Nuestras Raíces’s mission is: Celebrating Mexican-American Authors, Arts and Culture
